Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has explained the reasons behind claims that the state is dirty and smelly.

In a post on X on Friday, the commissioner attributed the state’s reputation for dirt and odour to the collective irresponsibility of its residents.

He identified indiscriminate waste disposal, blocked drainage channels, and open defecation as major contributors to the problem.

A video accompanying his statement showed a woman walking through a Lagos street with a bag of refuse. She was seen casually dumping the bag on the median dividing the road before being called back by an unidentified man to retrieve the waste.

The commissioner issued a stern warning to residents, emphasising that the Lagos State Government would no longer tolerate such acts of indiscipline.

He urged residents to dispose of their waste properly by patronising their assigned Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and refraining from practices such as urinating or defecating in public spaces.

Captioning the video, he wrote, “When people say Lagos is dirty, Lagos smells, it’s not a fictitious statement – if anything, it is the sum total of our collective irresponsibility.

“Indiscriminate dumping of waste, blocking of drainage channels, open defecation, how would Lagos not be dirty?!

“@followlasg will not tolerate any form of indiscipline and indiscriminate waste disposal; there is a system of collection, use it. Flouting the rules will now carry grave consequences.

“Dispose your waste properly. Patronize your assigned PSP operator. Desist from defecating/urinating on the roadside.”
