Residents of Mooro in the Ife North Local government area of Osun State have rejected the purported selection of Prince Oyeyemi Gideon Adebayo as the next monarch of the town.
The community members said that the process did not have any support of community people, home and abroad.
Meanwhile, a protest led by the 16 traditional chiefs of the community, made up of, Olumoro-in-Council was staged in the community to condemn the action of a cross section of people whom they claimed, took advantage of illiteracy of the kingmakers to manipulate the selection process, to force wrong monarch on the community.
Armed with placards with different inscriptions that read, ‘We reject the selection of Prince Adebayo as Mooro monarch’, ‘God should not adopt him as our new king, to avoid the problem in the community’, amongst others.
The protesters comprising, youths, men and women who trooped out the streets of the town as early hours of the day, frowned at the alleged manipulation process and described it as, unacceptable by the people of Mooro.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday in Moro, the Oosa of Moro land, High Chief Festus Abidemi Abidoye, on behalf of the community charged the state governor, Ademola Adeleke and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi to remove their consents and reverse the selection.
According to him, “the people of the community home and in the diaspora are not interested in any individual like prince Adebayo who did not possess any quality of a leader who could drive the desired growth and development of the town.
“The State Government should impose an embargo on all documentation associated with the recent selection of Prince Oyeyemi Gideon Adebayo for a traditional leadership position.
“The selection process is controversial and Governor should halt any further actions regarding the candidate.
“Selection carried out at Edunabon on 30th October 2024 does not have any the support of our people home and in the diaspora; since then the palace gate has been under lock and key, all chiefs boycott the palace to prove to the world that the selection of Prince Oyeyemi Gideon Adebayo is a manipulation and unacceptable by the people of Moro.
“On behalf of the community, the government should initiate a fresh process to ensure fairness and transparency.”
