The Wesley College of Science, Elekuro, Ibadan 2004 set has taken the initiative to renovate three blocks of classrooms of their alma maters.
The initiative is to enhance the learning of current students.
The project which costs over N7 million, involves painting, provision of doors, windows among others.
The president of the group, Mr Oluwaseun Ajayi, said the effort not only demonstrates the alumni’s commitment to giving back to their alma mater, but also highlights the importance of community involvement in education.
He said the initiative is crucial in addressing the challenges faced by educational institutions and also reflects a positive trend of alumni engagement in educational development.
Ajayi said: “We are celebrating a milestone, which is 20 years since we left this school and we are celebrating it with a very big project and I want to give glory to God for giving us the grace to achieve this and also thank members who put their resources together to make us achieve this feat.
“Wesley College is one of the greatest schools in West Africa and we want to reach out to all ex-students who have graduated from this school too. It’s a good thing to give back to your alma mater, to see into the structure that needs amendments, we still have a lot of things to do here and also many buildings need renovation.”
In his remarks, the school principal, Mr Ishola Obi, expressed gratitude to the alumni for the initiative to renovate classrooms with necessary materials.
During the unveiling of the project, the principal highlighted the importance of community involvement in education. “Our ex-students have shown that they care about their alma mater,” he stated.
“This renovation not only beautifies our school, but also fosters a sense of pride and belonging among our students.”
Obi encouraged other alumni groups to follow in the footsteps of their peers and also contribute to the school’s ongoing development. “Together, we can create an environment where our students thrive and excel,” he said.
“I’m really happy today because these are the set of students that I taught about 21-22 years ago and they are now here giving back to the school, renovating three classrooms. With these, it will make learning easy and more conducive for the students.”
Also, a retired principal of the school, Mr Issac Oladele, lauded the initiative, saying the old students have done well.
“This is part of what the government is hoping for; the government cannot do it alone, but we thank our alumni for the great gesture,” Oladele said.
