EDO State has long struggled with poor waste management, a challenge that affects private residences, business premises, and marketplaces. The situation has deteriorated further due to the inability of designated waste managers to remove debris in a timely manner, resulting in many areas being cluttered with refuse. The problem is exacerbated by the careless dumping of waste in public spaces, which leads to environmental hazards and poses risks to public health. Despite previous attempts to resolve the issue, many residents have voiced their frustration regarding the inefficiency of waste collection services. Overflowing dumpsters, scattered trash, and blocked drainage systems have become commonplace in urban areas such as Benin City and other regions of the state. This does not only detract from the state’s visual appeal but also presents serious health risks, including the potential spread of diseases and contamination of water sources. Acknowledging the pressing need for action, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has initiated significant measures to address the waste management crisis. In a recent effort to enhance the state’s environmental cleanliness, Governor Okpebholo unveiled a new set of waste management equipment for the Edo State Waste Management Board.

The event, held at the Government House, was attended by key government officials, including the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa and Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor. The newly introduced equipment, which features pay loaders, compactors, and tippers, is anticipated to enhance the waste management agency’s ability to collect and dispose of refuse more effectively throughout the state. During the event, Governor Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s dedication to ensuring a cleaner Edo State, asserting that “cleanliness is next to godliness” and highlighting the importance of a clean environment in attracting investors and improving the quality of life for residents. In addition to providing the necessary infrastructure, the governor urged the staff of the Waste Management Board to ensure that the equipment is used and maintained properly. He emphasized that these resources need to be deployed effectively to achieve the desired outcomes and to serve the best interests of the people. Governor Okpebholo’s initiatives represent a significant advancement in tackling Edo State’s waste management issues. However, ongoing success will depend on collaboration among the government, waste management agencies, and the community. Residents need to be educated about the importance of proper waste disposal, while waste managers must be held accountable for delivering efficient services.

As the administration implements these new measures, it is anticipated that Edo State will see improved waste management practices, resulting in a healthier and more appealing environment for everyone.
