Vice Chancellor of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, Prof Ibrahim Hassan Garba has commended the efforts of the Federal Government for the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
He made the commendation while speaking to journalists shortly after the matriculation of new students for the 2024/2025 academic session of the University.

According to him, “It is our belief that the NELFUND plays a crucial role in enhancing access to quality education for, especially indigent students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
“With the rising cost of registration fees and educational materials, many students face financial barriers that hinder their academic progress. The Fund therefore bridges this gap by providing affordable loans to eligible students, thereby empowering them to pursue their educational aspirations without the burden of financial strain.
“This support not only helps students pay for their registration fees, but, also covers essential expenses such as textbooks, accommodation, and other learning resources, facilitating a more conducive environment for academic success. We therefore urge the students to utilize that opportunity to ensure a smooth ride in their educational career.”
To the students, he stressed “As you embark on this academic journey, I want to leave you with these inspiring quotes about the power of knowledge.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. (Nelson Mandela) An investment in knowledge pays the best interest. Similarly, Benjamin Franklin) “Knowledge is the treasure of the mind, and the key to unlocking the secrets of the universe.”(Al-Khwarizmi).
“I am aware that the Orientation programme for this year is commencing immediately after the matriculation. You should hence, avail yourselves with the rich paper presentations to enrich your stay on the campus. You must avoid all social vices and be law-abiding.
“Remember, the knowledge that you acquire during your time at ATBU is not just for personal gain, but also for the betterment of society. We expect you to use your knowledge to make a positive impact on the world and to be agents of change in your communities. Therefore, stay focused, work hard, and always strive for excellence.
“In our efforts to encourage our students to do more in their studies, we have introduced a programme where all students that have made it to the VC’s list (i.e. CGPA 4.50 and above) will each year, be acknowledged at the Venue of the Matriculation.
“The successful students would be issued with a commendation letter and also have the privilege of having a handshake with the Vice-Chancellor. This will start today.”
The VC appealed to all staff to give their maximum support and cooperation to make ATBU a great institution stressing that, “I want to use this opportunity to also appeal to the members of the general public, all partners and stakeholders to support the University in our desire to make it an institution where teaching, research and learning are at its best and for excellence.”
