Nationnewslead reports that The Borno State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has rejected the outcome of the recently concluded Local Government Election and called for the conduct of fresh polls.
Candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress were declared winners of the 27 chairmanship positions as well as the entire 312 wards in the state.
The opposition party, on Wednesday, described the election as a mockery of democracy.
It said if the results were allowed to stand, they were capable of exacerbating the ongoing insurgency in the state.
A factional Chairman of the PDP in the state, Zanna Gadama, said this while reacting to the issuance of certificates of return to the elected chairmen and councilors, by the Borno State Independent Election Commission, in Maiduguri.
He told our correspondent that the process that led to last Saturday’s election was marred by irregularities.
Gadama said, “The state electoral commission set out to frustrate other parties from participating in the elections by charging exorbitant fees for chairmanship and councillorship.
“How can they charge as high as N5,000 for chairmanship positions when most of the locals cannot afford three square meals in a day due largely to the effects of Boko Haram terrorism in the state.
“We tried to get our members to contest in the elections but most of them didn’t because they didn’t have the money.”
