It said a fire service station would be situated around the market place to provide a swift response in case of an emergency.
A statement yesterday by the Information Officer, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Ademola Lawal, said Governor Adegboyega Oyetola during an on-the-spot assessment of New Market, Ile-Ife that was gutted by fire a few weeks ago, lamented the destruction of goods worth about N200 million.
Oyetola, represented by Commerce, Industry and Cooperative Commissioner Dr Bode Olaonipekun, said: “Barely eight months after a fire that destroyed goods and commodities worth N200 million at Omoworare Shopping Complex within the market, it is unfortunate that another fire incident occurred on the night of December 1, and gutted the entire “Iso Paanu” section of the market, destroying goods and commodities worth hundreds of millions of Naira.
“I want to assure the affected traders that the government will ensure that the market is remodelled to forestall incessant fire outbreaks.”
The Chairman of Ife Central Local Government, Olayera Elugbaju, promised that the government would situate the fire service station around the market to prevent recurrence.
