Nationnewslead reports that The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Lagos State University, Prof Elias Wahab, may be chosen as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution on Monday, investigations by PUNCH have revealed.

Wahab, who is a professor of sociology, was elected through e-voting as DVC in August 2020.

There are also indications that LASU Senate will meet on Monday.

A Principal Assistant Registrar of LASU Senate division, Mr Olawale Okugbesan, in a circular on Saturday, said there would be an emergency Senate meeting on Monday, January 11, 2021.

The incumbent Vice- Chancellor, Prof Olarenwaju Fagbohun, will end his tenure on the same day.

The circular indicated that the Senate meeting would hold at 10am to discuss issues around the appointment of a new VC for the university.

However, a reliable source in LASU who did not want his name mentioned because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said the purpose of the Senate emergency meeting was to choose an acting VC whom the outgoing VC would hand over to as requested by the Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“The purpose of the Senate emergency meeting is to choose an acting VC and it is the DVC Academics, Prof Elias Wahab, that will likely be chosen to act for the next 45 days,” the source said.

Sanwo-Olu had on Friday cancelled the process set up for the appointment of a substantive ninth vice-chancellor for the school.

He further directed that a fresh process for the selection of a new VC would terminate in 45 days should commence immediately.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Committee, Lagos State, has called on Fagbohun to reverse the recent directive for the increment of the institution’s fees. Recently, LASU increased its fees from N25,000 to N67,000.

The students said this in a statement, jointly signed by the chairmen of NANS JJC, Lagos axis and Progressive Student Movement, Samuel Olalere and Bestman Okereafo.

It read in part, “We have no doubt the purported increment is unknown to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as he understands that the global pandemic lockdown has done more harm than good to Lagosians and Nigerians. Many jobs have been lost, many lives have been lost and many have been rendered despondent. We, therefore, do not expect any reasonable school management to increase school fees at this time, even as we have received adequate information that the VC will be bowing out of active service on Monday, 11th Jan 2021. We advise him, to do the needful by returning all fees to the status quo.”

The statement also appealed to the government to disinfect all tertiary institutions in preparation for resumption.
