After about 10 days in the kidnappers’ den, abducted former Delta State Commissioner for Technical Education, Mrs Joan Onyemaechi Mrakpor, has been released by her abductors.
Onyemaechi was also a former member of the House of Representatives and a stalwart of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
She was kidnapped on July 30, 2024, from her church premises along the DBS Road, Asaba, Delta State capital.
Sources said she was initially rumoured to have been killed by her abductors and was released late Friday night.
Amid sketchy details, the former lawmaker is said to have arrived in Asaba, already.
Reports had earlier filtered in during the week that her abductors had demanded N1 billion as ransom.
It could, however, not be ascertained, if the money or part of it was paid to her abductors before her release.
Meanwhile, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, has confirmed her release.
The gun-wielding kidnappers, it will be recalled, before abducting the former commissioner on July 30 in her church premises, had killed two persons including a policeman while some others sustained gunshot injuries.
