The planned youth leadership election of the Isiagu Community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State has been postponed due to incidents of extortion, threats, destruction of property, and other electoral violence.

The Community’s President General, Mr Udochukwu Nnebedum, made the announcement during a peaceful protest by the community’s youths over the postponement of the leadership election of the Community Youth Association, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday 11th April 2023.

Mr Nnebedum apologized to the youths for the postponement and assured the general public that the Isiagu community remains safe and habitable for business and residence.

He also appealed to the youths to remain peaceful and united as the proposed election for the leadership of the Association will hold in the near future.

The chairmanship candidate in the election, Mr Chioma Ekemezie, and youth representative, Mr Ifeanyi Owa, expressed disappointment over the conduct of some persons who only want to use the youths for their selfish goals and hate to see the youths being organized towards a collective positive goal.

They appealed to the town union, responsible for the conduct of the said election, to assume responsibility immediately and ensure the election is conducted in due time.

Another candidate in the election, Mr Sunday Igwenagu, commended the President General for his commitment to handling the issue concerning the youths and pledged the unalloyed support of the youths to the development of the town.

Explaining the reason for the postponement, the Traditional ruler of the town, Igwe Augustine Nwankwo, revealed that there were complaints of extortion, destruction of properties, and threats among the contestants before the election which led to the decision to call off the election and cool off the tension the exercise had generated.
