Ahead of the next September governorship election in Edo State, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio has said the ruling All Progressives Congress would take the state from the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Senator Akpabio made the declaration on Friday when the APC national vice chairman, South-South, Victor Giadom, led the zonal leadership to the Senate President on a solidarity visit.
Senator Akpabio, who recalled the defection of the incumbent Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, to the PDP before the last governorship election in 2020, said the APC was determined to “get back what belongs to us.”
Senator Akpabio told the zonal leadership of the party that they must ensure that the south-south region gives massive support and votes to Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, having secured the exalted seat of Senate President in the zone.
He said:” You will be surprised that the votes from Akwa Ibom alone for the APC in the Presidential election were more than the total votes from the five states of the South East
“What it really means is that recall when David Lyon contested in Bayelsa State, he won resoundingly, but he was not sworn in; that happened a day before swearing in, and even this last one that Timipre Sylva contested, we also did very well, and we are now in court, so I cannot comment on that.
That shows you the strength of the APC in the region, and even when the PDP is the ruling party in Rivers State, where the Chairman Victor Giadom comes from, in the presidential election we were able to win Rivers State. Data cannot lie.
“I want to say that with that giant step now that we have a Senate President, I don’t see any reason why the entirety of the South-South Region will not become APC.
The only way we can pay back the national leaders of our party and the only way we can show the President for standing by us in the South-South to produce a Senate President after 45years is for us to make sure that in 2027 we will give him and the entire APC resounding victory in the six States of the South-South region
“We are steadily moving on; Cross Rivers State is 100% APC. Here and there, some people will emerge either in the Senate, the House of Representatives, or the House of Assembly, but the governorship and government of the state are totally APC. Akwa Ibom has the Senate President, so for you to have members of the House of Representatives shows that things are about to happen.
For you to have won the presidential election in Rivers State, where the Zonal chairman comes from, it means things are beginning to happen, and even winning in 2019 in Bayelsa State, except for technical issues in the court, shows clearly that APC has come to stay in the entire South.
“In Edo State, the APC governor took the government house into another party, and so the election is coming next year, as we will expect the chairman to double his efforts with all of us included in the campaign and ensure we get back what belongs to us.
Your visit is timely and I believe strongly that working together with you at APC can only be stronger in the South-South Region
“On our part, we are working across party lines to support President Tinubu; all the senators of the South are determined to give him support so that he can succeed, irrespective of party affiliation, and that is a good sign.”
Leader of the delegation and Zonal Chairman, Victor Giadom, said, “The election of Akpabio has given us a sense of fulfilment as the zone served in that capacity under Joseph Wayas 45 years ago.
“We weren’t surprised, considering your achievements as a two-term governor in Akwa Ibom State.
“We assure you of our continued support in ensuring that APC wins more states in the south.”
