The Home Economics Teachers Association of Nigeria (HETAN), Oyo State Chapter has lauded the Governor Seyi Makinde administration over the inclusion of Home Economics among subjects for which teachers are being sought in the ongoing recruitment exercise by the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
In a statement by the HETAN president, Mrs S. O. Fadiji and general secretary, Mrs T.O. Alabi, the group pointed to noteworthy milestones in the education sector under the present administration evidenced by the recruitment of additional 7,500 teachers for public secondary schools and 3,000 non-teaching staff as well as 7,000 public primary schools’ teachers with 100 care givers.
He said the Makinde administration showed magnanimity embarking on recruitment in spite of present economic challenges.
The association, however, noted the need for government to ensure the incorporation of Home Economics as a subject in all public and private secondary schools teachers in the state.
In addition, the association demanded the provision of standard Home Economics laboratories across schools.
HETAN further called for the inclusion of members of its association, who are Home Economics educationists, as stakeholders in policy-making and curriculum development of Home Economics subjects in the state.
The association stressed the significance of Home Economics subjects (Foods & Nutrition, Clothing & Textiles, and Home Management) to the students in acquiring skills that will enable them to be self-reliant.
