During Thursday’s plenary, the House of Representatives expressed serious concern over the continuous activities of bandits, which disrupted the 2023 Presidential and National Assembly elections in two polling units in Safana and Batsari Local Government Areas of Katsina State.
In an effort to ensure the safety of lives and property in the affected areas, the House called on the Federal Government to put an end to the persistent attacks, shootings, burnings, kidnappings, and other banditry in Batsari/Safana/Danmusa Federal Constituency of Katsina State.
During his lead debate, Hon. Aliyu Abubakar (APC-Katsina) narrated the ordeal of his constituents, stating, “I was at home last weekend, and what I met was multiple attacks, shootings, killings, and kidnappings of people in Babbanduhu and Kirtawa villages in Safana Local Government and Nahuta, Yangayya, and Dankar villages in Batsari Local Government and other villages in Danmusa Local Government.
“Bandits attacked these villages, leaving many dead, while others were wounded and kidnapped. Currently, there are people receiving treatment in the Federal Medical Centre, now Federal Teaching Hospital in Katsina, while some are in the hands of these bandits. The bandits operate day and night, meaning that there are bandits called solar bandits who operate in daylight, while the other category operates at night on a daily basis.
“My people in these areas and other areas with security challenges have left their homes and farms. They can no longer farm or trade. This poses a danger of a food crisis in the Constituency. Out of six District Heads in the Constituency, only two live in their domains, while others live either in Katsina or Kano. Additionally, out of 60 village or ward heads, only less than 10 village heads live in their areas as well.
“Yantumaki district head was attacked and killed in his home palace a while ago, and also my own brother, who was a village head, was attacked and shot in the head, leading to his death. His wife and youngest child were kidnapped, and I had to pay N2 million ransom for their release.
“This 2023 Presidential and National Assembly elections could not even hold in two wards of Danmusa Local Government and some polling units in Safana and Batsari Local Government Areas due to the high activities of Bandits in the area,” Hon. Abubakar noted with grief.
In response, the House urged relevant security agencies responsible for maintaining law and order, as well as protecting lives and properties, to adopt new security tactics and strategies to put an end to the daily attacks, shootings, and kidnappings in the affected areas.
