Bauchi State Commissioner of Health, Dr Sabiu Abdu Gwalabe has assured that the government will open more youth-friendly hospitals across the state to pay special attention to the health needs of adolescents, especially girls.
The Commissioner also assured that his Ministry will bring up a budgetary proposal in the 2024 appropriation to take care of healthcare services delivery for adolescents in line with the current realities.
He was speaking when a cross-section of participants during the sensitization training organized by USAID Integrated Health Program USAID – IHP in collaboration with the Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (BASPHCDA) to commemorate the 2023 Adolescent Health Week paid him an advocacy visit in his office.
Sabiu Abdu Gwalabe who was responding to requests made by the youths said that the requests will be granted due consideration and appreciated their dedication and resilience towards adolescent and youth reproductive health.
Earlier, the Youth Group in Bauchi State had asked the State Ministry of Health to create a budget line for Adolescent Reproductive Health (ARH) in the State’s Annual Budget.
The advocacy visit was part of a sensitization training organized by the USAID Integrated Health Program IHP in collaboration with the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency for youth and adolescent girls in the State to draw youths of both genders together and educate them on issues bordering on adolescent and reproductive health.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Youth Ambassador, Faruk Sulaiman requested additional youth-friendly Primary Healthcare Centres in the remaining fourteen LGAs, where Adolescent Reproductive Health will be integrated and overseen by trained service providers.
He said that already, six LGAs of Bauchi, Dass, Katagum, Misau and Ningi are having such facilities providing such services.
Faruk Sulaiman also said that twenty-one Adolescents and Youths have been trained by IHP in 2021 and were made Ambassadors to encourage their peers to utilize the youth-friendly health facilities.
Speaking at the opening of the training, the Technical Director of IHP in Bauchi, Dr Ibrahim Kabo charged the youths to be focused and think for themselves about their health and development without waiting for older people to do the same for them.
He assured them that USAID IHP will ensure that they got the needed training and capacity to improve their health status as leaders of tomorrow.
Earlier during the opening of the sensitization training, the IHP Integrated PHC Advisor, Mrs Olabisi Alalade said that the essence of educating the participants on Menstrual Management and Hygiene was critical to their living.
She stressed that it would help them understand the complications associated with that as well as proffer solutions to tackle such problems when the need arises.
In a paper presentation titled Sensitization Talk on Menstruation, Menstrual Hygiene and Standard Days Method, a Service Provider, Zainab Rabi’u highlighted the complications associated with menstruation and provide solutions towards tackling them stressing however that they are nothing to worry about.
She also stated the benefits of menstrual hygiene management to the girls and the need for support by their partners in that regard calling on the boys to always lend a helping hand since it is a collective responsibility.
