Journalists in Nigeria have been urged to be fair and objective in their reportage of events in order to contribute to the development of the country.
The advice was given by the Principal Private Secretary (PPS) to the Governor of Kaduna State, Sen Uba Sani, Prof Ayuba Bello while interacting with Journalists at the NUJ Press Center, Bauchi on Saturday.
Bello Ayuba said “Though you have the power to, please, don’t engage in journalism of destruction, don’t do journalism of calumny, be developmental in your output.
“Journalists are looked up to be the eyes, ears and mouth of the common man, you should therefore, speak the truth and be fair to all.”
Bello Ayuba who was once a practising Journalist in Bauchi before venturing into academics where he rose to become a Professor, urged journalists not to be carried away with the monetary incentives but to strive to improve themselves by engaging in educational pursuits.
Going down memory lane, he said, “Don’t limit yourself, you can aim high in life, your determination to excel should propel you to greatness. People have done it, you can do it too.
“There are a lot of avenues for you to rise to the top, just be motivated by the ability to do your best. Be focused and move on.”
The PPS encouraged Journalists to be fearless in the discharge of their professional functions knowing that the public is eager to hear from them.
Ayuba who savoured his sojourn as a Journalist in those years, expressed his readiness to use his office to boost the quality of journalism in Kaduna and Bauchi States.
