Owerri, the capital of Imo and its environs has been deserted by residents following the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for the commemoration of Biafra Day.

This is coming against the official statement issued yesterday Wednesday by the Imo State Police Command urging residents of the state to disregard the IPOB sit-at-home order.

The Nigeria Police in their statement said that they have deployed joint security personnel drawn from the Police, Military, NSCDC, Immigration, Fire Service amongst others in the 27 council areas of Imo State to confront any form of insecurity.

The IPOB order recorded 90% as all the markets, schools, motor parks, filling stations, commercial banks were completely deserted.

Both the major roads such as Owerri/Umuahia Road, Owerri/Onitsha Road, Owerri/Port Harcourt Road, and Owerri Road were not left out as movement transporters, private and commercial vehicles were completely restricted.

The roads/streets in the city of Owerri such as Whethdral Road, Dugla Road amongst others were also left empty while hotels, eateries, shops and business centers were closed down for fear of being attacked or harassed.

Nigerian Tribune correspondent who monitored the situation in Owerri, reported that both primary schools in the state were under lock and key except students of Secondary Schools taking WAEC seen rushing to their schools as early as 6.30 am for their Mathematic examination.

Residents of the state restricted their movement by staying back at their homes in total obedience to the order and for fear of any eventualities
Travelers seen on the road waiting to board a vehicle to their destinations were stranded, leaving the few commercial vehicles on the roads.

Our correspondent in Owerri reported that there was a security helicopter seen hovering in the air in state.
