President Joe Biden called for unity and to “bind the nation’s wounds”, Less than a week after a contentious presidential election, he made remarks on Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery before his Wednesday meeting with President-elect Donald Trump.
Quoting former president, Abraham Lincoln, Biden said, “We have many obligations, but only one truly sacred obligation, sacred. To prepare those we send into harm’s way and to care for them and their families when they return home and when they don’t. It’s an obligation, not based on party or politics, but our promise that unites us all today as we strive to finish the work of our moment to bind the nation’s wounds once again, we commit and recommit to this sacred vow.
“This is the last time I will stand here in Arlington as Commander-in-Chief. It’s been the greatest honour of my life to lead you, to serve you, to care for you, to defend you, just as you defended us”, he said in a short farewell message.
He talked about the work his administration has done to support veterans and the sacrifices they have made over the years to protect Americans, while also mentioning many of the accomplishments of his administration to the veterans as president of the United States. He thought back on his choice to leave Afghanistan, which at the start of his presidency caused a chaotic operation and irreversible political harm.
President Biden wore a tie with the insignia of the charity organization established in honor of his late son, Beau Biden, to show his respect for him.
Karen Durham-Aguilera, executive director of the Army National Military Cemeteries and the Office of Army Cemeteries, recognized Vice President Kamala Harris earlier in the program when she named important guests.
The audience gave the vice president a lot of applause, and she put her palm on her chest as if to express her gratitude.
