Kano state government has approved the procurement of life jackets for riverine communities aimed at protecting the lives and properties of the people.

The state Commissioner of Transportation, Alhaji Muhammad Ibrahim Diggol made this known at a stakeholders meeting on water transportation, held in the state capital.

According to him, the state government has observed and witnessed some boat mishaps in the some local communities in the state.

He then stated that this make it necessary to take appropriate measures in the water transportation system particularly in the eighteen local government areas connected with water rivers.

Diggol said the government has approved the disbursement of life jackets to some riverine communities as part of its commitment to reduce the rates of boat mishaps that claim the lives and properties of the people.

He added that the ministry has concluded plans to work hand in hand with affected local governments to undertake livehood survey and safety measures in the water transportation improvement after conducting comprehensive survey a

This was amed at tackling the challenges bedivilling water transportation system in the local government areas.

Speaking at the occasion, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Alhaji Abdulmumin Musa Aliyu explained that the meeting was designed to discuss issues related to water transportation system and to come up with appropriate measures as well that will address the rates of boat mishaps across the state.

He, however, said the meeting has indicated commitment of the present administration in protecting lives and properties of the people and called on the local government councils to cooperate with the ministry by giving all the necessary support and cooperation to achieve the set goals.
