Borno flood: Police recover 11 bodies, rescue operations ongoing

Borno State Police Command has put in place, joint efforts led by the Commissioner, Yusufu Mohammed Lawal as well as the dedicated Officers to mitigate the effects of the flood disasters that ravaged Maiduguri and environs.

The team is actively engaged in addressing the flood disaster in Maiduguri metropolis (MMC) leading to the recovery of Eleven decomposed corpses as a result of the flood disaster while rescue operations are currently ongoing.

Following reports from various Divisions including Lamisula, Jere, GRA, Bulabulin and Dandal Divisional Police Headquarters in Maiduguri, the Eleven drowned corpses were recovered in different areas between the hours of 1000hrs to 1400hrs on 11/09/2024 and 12/09/2024.

Given the gravity of the tragic situation, the Command declared that it is committed to dedicating all possible efforts to ensure that recovery and rescue operations are carried out effectively in the affected communities.

Meanwhile, the Command has refuted what it described as a misleading information regarding the Police Hospital, Alkome which is providing aid to displaced individuals and rescues stranded victims including a pregnant Woman who was in Labor.

The Command dismissed a widely circulated post on social media alleging the need for assistance at the Police Hospital, Alkome along Muna Garage.

It stated that, “This misinformation is refuted, and it is essential to clarify that the Police Hospital, Alkome is providing shelter and support for approximately 300 displaced persons following a catastrophic flood that left them homeless.”

The Command added that, “Basic necessities such as shelter, water, and medical services have been made available to these individuals.”

“Additionally, on September 13th, 2024, at approximately 1233HRS, a rescue mission led by the Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, CP Mohmmed Lawal Yusufu resulted in the retrieval of a pregnant woman, Mrs. Fatima Dantalla, aged 21, from Customs area in Maiduguri,” It added.

According to the Command, “Mrs. Dantalla, who was about to deliver, had been left without medical assistance. The rescue team, under the leadership of CP ML Yusufu, promptly transported her to Alkome Police Clinic along with 30 displaced persons. It is reported that Mrs. Dantalla successfully gave birth to a baby boy following the immediate medical attention.”

The Borno State Police Command assured that it is steadfast in its commitment to upholding the safety and security of the people of Borno State.”

It concluded that, “We urge the public to remain vigilant against misleading information aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the Police,” as contained in a statement by SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, Supervising Police Public Relations Officer, North-East.
