The Scout Association of Nigeria, Oyo State chapter, has sought government support to enhance its activities across the nation.
State Scout Commissioner, Oyo State, Dr Zach Ekanola, made the appeal at the association’s annual general meeting (AGM) held at its state headquarters, Ibadan, against the backdrop of the perceived inactivity of the association.
Noting that the association contributed to a morally upright society by moulding the character of young people, Ekanola said the government’s financial support will help enhance its conscientious activities.
Though he stressed that the association was non-profit, he said more financial support for scouts will enhance its various sensitization and orientation activities targeted at a crime-free society.
In its activities, he said the Scout Association promoted the need for Nigerians to have the mindset that security is everyone’s business rather than waiting on security agencies to secure society.
He downplayed notions of the inactivity of the association, saying the Scouts association boasted thousands of members across the 33 local government areas of the state.
On his part, the vice president of the Oyo Council, Mr Joseph Alajogun, said the government should understand that both state and non-state actors must be engaged in security.
He tasked scouts with imbibing the spirit of commitment as a criterion to attain the pinnacle of success in Nigeria.
Also speaking, the assistant chief commissioner of the South West zone of the association, Mr Adigun Peter, tasked members with rendering selfless service to humanity.
Delivering a lecture on the occasion, Mr Yahaya Olawale of the Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) also spoke on the need for officers to promote national integration, peace, and self-discipline.
Representing the Oyo police command, Mr Kehinde Adekoya stressed the importance of scout collaboration with regular security agencies on traffic control and curbing crime in society.
The event also had representatives of the Girls Guide.
