K-pop sensation J-Hope, a member of the global phenomenon BTS, completed his 18 months of mandatory military service in South Korea on Thursday.

Since 2022, the seven members of BTS have been on a self-declared “hiatus” due to South Korea’s requirement that all able-bodied men under 30 serve in the military, a measure driven by the nation’s tensions with North Korea, which is armed with nuclear weapons.

J-Hope, the group’s lead dancer, emerged from his military base in Wonju, a city in central South Korea.

He was greeted with a warm embrace from fellow band member Jin, who completed his own service in June.

After the reunion, J-Hope saluted reporters and a group of devoted fans who had gathered to witness his discharge.

Reflecting on his time in the military, he shared, “During the past one year and six months, I realised that many soldiers in the military are making great efforts and sacrifices to protect the country.”

He encouraged public support for those still on active duty, adding, “Thank you so much for waiting for me, and I deeply appreciate the strong support and love you have shown.”

Fans, known collectively as ARMY, lined the streets outside the base to welcome their idol back to civilian life.

Colourful banners waved in the breeze, with messages such as “The sun is finally shining upon ARMY” and “My bank account! It’s ready to go straight to J-Hope!” capturing the excitement of the moment.

Despite safety warnings urging fans not to gather, around 50 people, including international admirers from China and Brazil, turned up early Thursday to show their support.
