It was a celebration time penultimate weekend as the John Fawole Chess Awards 2024 brought together distinguished guests and celebrated players to honour outstanding achievements in Nigeria’s chess community.
The event, held at the Chevron Recreation Center in Gbagada, Lagos State, recognised individuals who have contributed significantly to the growth of the sport, showcasing their dedication and impact.
The awards ceremony was graced by notable figures such as Mr. Lekan Adeyemi, Vice President of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), and Prince Adewole Adeyinka, Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, among other key players in the chess community. Their presence highlighted the prestige of the occasion, as the awards celebrated both players and organizers who have worked tirelessly to develop chess in Nigeria.
Also in attendance were Arena Grandmaster Apemiye Austin, International Arbiter Amisu Omotayo, Mr. Dasaolu Rotimi, and FIDE Arbiter Oyebanji Ademola. These distinguished guests applauded the efforts of the awardees and the chess community for their continued commitment to the sport.
John Oyeyemi Fawole, founder of the awards, expressed his gratitude and admiration for the recipients, stating, “The John Fawole Chess Awards 2024 celebrates Nigeria’s chess excellence.
We’re proud to recognize the dedication and passion of our players and stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to promote chess in Nigeria.”
A total of 30 awards were presented, acknowledging outstanding performances in various categories. Some of the top awards included Man Player of the Year 2022, which went to Adegboyega Adebayo, and Woman Player of the Year 2022, awarded to Ogbiyoyo Perpetual.
The 2023 titles were claimed by Bomo Kigigha and Deborah Quickpen, with Quickpen also securing Junior Player of the Year 2023 (Girls).
In addition to the competitive awards, special recognition was given to individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to chess development in Nigeria.
Among them were former president Ibrahim Babangida, Ecobank Nigeria, and Dr. Chioma Jovita, who were honored for their continued support of the sport.
