Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes has said that the caretaker boss, Michael Carrick decided to keep Cristiano Ronaldo out of his XI because he opted for a formation that provides more protection to the back four.

Carrick, who is serving the club on a care-taker basis pending the arrival of Ralf Rangnick, on Sunday decided to bench Cristiano Ronaldo for the Premier League game against Chelsea.

The coach, however, opted for Bruno Fernandes as a false nine while naming his side’s starting XI for the game at Stamford Bridge.

Man United head to the game after beating Villarrea 2-0 in the Champions League in midweek.

Asked on Sky Sports what he thinks about the decision, the former United midfielder said, “I think he is playing a team to protect the back four.

“Manchester United do not play like this. We do not play like this. Well, but I think he’s picked a team to protect the back four.”
