The Supreme Court of Nigeria has clarified that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, did not engage in a telephone conversation with anyone, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, regarding the ongoing Presidential Election Petition concerning the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.

The Apex Court emphasised that Justice Ariwoola did not speak with Tinubu or the Director General of the Department of State Service (DSS) in an attempt to exert pressure on the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) regarding the potential judgment on the petitions.

Dr Akande Festus, the Director of Press and Information of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, released a statement in Abuja on Wednesday to provide clarification on the matter. The statement reads as follows:

“Given the current rumours circulating on social media that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, had a telephone conversation with His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Director General of the Department of State Service (DSS), with the intention of influencing the likely judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Court, it is essential to state categorically that these claims are entirely false.

There was no such telephone conversation between the CJN and anyone.

“Nigerians have been closely following the proceedings at the Presidential Election Petition Court with admirable enthusiasm. Therefore, it is advisable that we all maintain this level of engagement and follow the proceedings until their conclusion, rather than succumbing to speculation and spreading unfounded rumours that will serve no one’s interests.

“If we continue to perpetuate falsehoods and engage in mudslinging, our nation’s progress will be hindered. The judiciary is constitutionally mandated to serve the best interests of the people, and we are committed to fulfilling that duty to the best of our ability.

“We urge everyone to cooperate with the judiciary so that it can function to its fullest capacity. No individual will receive preferential treatment over another in any dispute.

“The rule of law and the supremacy of the Nigerian Constitution will always be upheld and applied in all matters brought before the courts. The facts presented and the existing laws will determine the merit or lack thereof in each case.

“The public can rest assured that justice will be served in all pending matters across the country’s various courts, regardless of the individuals involved.”
