The warring factions at Okpaka community in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State have resolved to put aside their differences and work towards peaceful coexistence, following a prolonged leadership dispute that ravaged the community.
The peace initiative was reached recently when the chairman of Udu Local Government Area, Vincent Oyibode brokered a peace meeting between the factions at Brooklyn Hall at the council secretariat in Otor-Udu.
Oyibode urged the factions to unite in the interest of Okpaka, acknowledging the devastating impact of the conflict on property and community relations.
After intense deliberations, both factions agreed to maintain peace and unity in Okpaka, uphold the leadership structure constituted by council chairman, recognise Friday Farah as President-General, Austin Emakpo as youth leader and David Miller as secretary.
Other agreements reached included undertaking reconstruction efforts to compensate for losses incurred, receiving financial support from the council for community rebuilding and stopping all court actions.
Oyibode expressed gratitude for the factions’ willingness to set aside differences, saying, “This resolution marks a new era of peace and development for Okpaka.”
The ‘Okapako Orere’ (Eldest man in the community), Pa John Emuosiuko praised Oyibode’s initiative, stating that “The chairman’s efforts have brought hope to our community.”
The meeting was attended by Leader of the Legislative arm, Hon. Henry Apunu; Secretary of the Local Government Area; Hon. Andrew Gbise; the CSO of Ovwian Police Station, Bulus Musa and other executive members of the council.
