The Delta State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, has assured the Nigeria Corrections Centre of his ministry’s collaboration in deepening justice delivery system in the state.

Ohwovoriole stated this in Asaba when the Controller, Delta State Command of the Nigeria Corrections Service, Mr. Raymond Mbaduwe Nwagu, paid him a visit.

He said that his office and that of the state Controller of Nigeria Correctional Service worked hand in hand as different departments in the criminal justice system.

The attorney general noted that there was no way the Ministry of Justice could function by just going to court, secure conviction and send offenders to prison and when they were back they become worste than how they were before being imprisoned.

Ohwovoriole commended the Controller for his mindset that the inmates were not just at the prison for punishment but to ensure their development in terms of skill acquisition so as to be useful to themselves and the society at large.

He told the Controller that the Ministry of Justice in Delta State has Restorative Justice Unit, adding that the essence of this is to prevent minor offences from going to court.

Earlier, Mr. Nwagu said that they were in his office because the attorney general’s office was one of their areas of coverage, stressing that without Ministry of Justice, it will be difficult for them to carry out their job effectively.

He solicited amnesty for some of the inmates, noting that many of them have merited the requirements for them to be granted amnesty.

High point of the controller’s visit was the presentation of an award of Excellent service delivery to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice by the Controller of the Nigeria Corrections Centre.

In a related development, Ohwovoriole also received the team of the Law Hub Development and Advocacy, led by Austin Ikechukwu who paid him a courtesy visit ahead of their training programme for stakeholders in the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
