As the world is a place of battles throughout life, it is necessary to depend on God for help. Each day, week, month and year is filled with battles (Matthew 6:34). To scale through the year that is filled with evil, you will need God’s help. The strength of man is not sufficient and enough overcome the battles in the world because the battles are spiritual battles and as such the spiritual power is needed to overcome those battles. And God is the source of the spiritual power with which you can overcome the battles in the world. The scripture says “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against power, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Eph.6:12).
God’s help is also essential as Satan, the author and architect of all evils roams about the world to do evil. (Job 1:11; Job 2:1, 2). I Peter 5:7 describe the devil as men’s adversary who goes around like a roaring lion, seeking whom to devour. In guiding against the devil, you will need God’s help to defeat the devil.
Human help can fail, disappoint and fluctuate. Therefore you cannot fully trust man even when he promises to help. Only God can be trusted. Man’s environment, situations and circumstances demand divine intervention and help. The Psalmist cries: “Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man (Ps.60:11).
Nature of God’s Help
You need to understand the nature of God’s help to receive His help. His help is universal, available to all men, whether black or white, rich or poor. Only God can help – directly or through man. No man can exempt himself from God’s help as nothing is impossible for God. What is impossible for man is possible for God, as such all men regardless of their status need help from God (Isaiah 40:12, 15, 17, 22, 25).
Secondly, God’s help comes from above, i.e. from God Himself, and so, the help can neither be limited by space nor stopped by demonic forces. The kind of God’s help is a help that cannot be stopped by man or evil forces when God is ready to help. The writer of Psalm 121 understands the nature of God’s help and decides to go for God’s help. He says; ‘I will lift up mine eyes unto the hill from whence cometh my help? my help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth’, (verse 1-2). He understands his help can only come from God and not from any hill or persons. Thus he doesn’t put his trust on them.
Also note this; God’s help is constant and unfailing. The kind of help God gives is not like that of man which can fail. God’s help is constant and can never fail. The fact that God helped those people in years past does not say He cannot help in this present age. As His power cannot fail, His help cannot fail. Nothing can stop Him if He is determined to help as He is the present help in the time of trouble (Psalm 46:1).
The help of God is universal – it is for the whole human race. His help is not limited to a particular race or ethnicity. His help is available to the dark in completion; it is available to the fair in completion. It is available both for the rich and the poor. But His help is special to those who trust Him. Generally, God’s help is available to the entire human race, but more importantly, those who trust in Him will enjoy more because they believe in His ability to help them.
The help of God is for the helpless and the hopeless. The man at the pool of Bethsaida was helpless and hopeless and for 35 years he could not see any man that could help him move into the pool for his healing. But at the appointed time when divine help was available for him, he was healed. What we need all of the time is divine help because without divine help, our hopelessness cannot turn around (John 5:7-9).
Therefore God’s help can prevent us from experiencing evil and save us from consequences of evil – God’s help is available in all situations of life – it is available at every season of life, hence God’s help is dependable, at all times and seasons of life. It cannot fail at the raining season and it cannot be limited by sun during the dry season.
How to secure divine help
Confession of our helplessness – ‘I am poor and needy’. God helps when man realizes his failures and inadequacy; He can only help those who acknowledge His ability to help. Anyone who refuses to recognize God as source of help cannot benefit from help that comes from God. Hence, when you seek for God’s help, He will not restrain from helping you because His help is always available to those who serve Him in sincerity and in truth (Micah 7:7; Isaiah 25:9).
Having a deep relationship with God, both as God and as Father (Isaiah 25:9; Psalm 91:2; Matthew 6:11). John 1:12 says; ‘But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name? You stand to enjoy His help if you have become the son of God who has a relationship with God on daily basis.
Another way to enjoy divine help is to follow the divine plan of God for his life as laid down in the scripture. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says; ‘If my people who are called by name will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins and will heal their land’. One of the divine expectation of God for believers is to seek His face and if we must seek His face, we must humble ourselves and turn from our wicked ways.
The Lord gives the assurance that He will hear from heaven and gives help in our every difficult situation – all we need to do is turn from our wicked ways, humble ourselves and seek His face. When we do this, divine help is certain for us; and when divine help is certain, victory, success and breakthrough are all certain for us.
By prayer and fasting (Mark 9:29). Praying to God at all times is a means for seeking for God’s help and deliverance over demonic forces. You want help and deliverance, pray to God who is able to help at all times. By believing God and His promises, you get divine help over all difficult situations.
Putting God first is another means to secure divine help. You will have to obey His commandments if you want Him to come to your rescue at difficult times.
Exhibiting acts of goodness help bring God into your situation. (Gen.18:10; Gen.19).
