In the dynamic world of human resources, Nkereuwem Martins brings a lot of contagious energy and dedication to the field.

With over 14 years of experience, Martins has carved an impressive path, making significant contributions to the field, but she said the journey may have just begun as she plans to make a greater impact on society.

Speaking about how her journey began in one of the top consulting firms in Nigeria, where she provided HR advisory services to clients in various sectors, occupying increasingly pivotal roles, her experience was further deepened in the financial services industry (non-bank sector), where she has played a key role in leading the delivery of HR programmes and efficient HR operations in multiple companies.

Known for her versatile leadership and business acumen, Martins, who is the founder and lead consultant at UM Solutions et al. Limited, pointed out that her current job takes her back to her foundation of providing customised advisory services to clients; she serves businesses that desire high-value services but are not able to afford the big consulting firms.

She is an advocate for deploying a data-driven approach to providing HR solutions, as she believes numbers do not lie. As such, Martins leverages tools like MS Excel, Tableau, and PowerPoint to analyse and tell compelling stories with data, having been exposed to the subject early and further deepening this knowledge via a certificate programme in Data Analysis for Management from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Speaking with respect to navigating diverse reporting structures, she emphasised that effective HR leadership is pivotal in meeting the multifaceted needs of all kinds of employee groups, irrespective of size.

Her deep competence has not gone unnoticed, as she bagged certifications from globally recognised HR institutions such as the HR Certification Institute (HRCI) and the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM). As she said, it simply “puts a stamp on my professional expertise and credibility.”

Beyond her professional achievements, Martins said she dedicates time to coaching early-career and transitioning individuals, embodying her belief in the importance of talent development and the value one can get from having the right guidance.

Martins likes to write, and, in her words, “it is calming; I express myself a lot better when writing.”. She has lots of personal and professional content that she has written but not put out in the public domain, and she says she will devote time to this aspect of her expression and begin to put her content out to benefit others.

For now, she combines her love for writing with her technical expertise in voluntary service as an examination item writer for HRCI, the premier credentialing organisation for the human resource profession and one of the most globally recognised HR institutions, demonstrating her dedication to advancing the HR profession.

On what she intends to be known for, she says, “I want to be known for my competence, leadership, and commitment to continuous improvement.”. I hope to continue to inspire.
