President Bola Tinubu, in his role as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has called on global leaders to adopt multilateralism and reject protectionism to achieve sustainable peace, security, and development.

Speaking at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing, he emphasized that partnerships rooted in mutual respect and inclusivity are crucial for addressing today’s global challenges, including food insecurity and armed conflict.

A statement by Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity) informed that during the high-level meeting on peace and security, Tinubu praised the African Union’s efforts to promote peace through initiatives such as the “Silencing the Guns Initiative” and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to promoting stability in West Africa.

“Embracing multilateralism and strengthening cooperative partnerships are essential if we must secure lasting peace and prosperity for future generations,” said Tinubu.

He expressed gratitude to China for its consistent support through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative and FOCAC.

Tinubu further stressed the need to tackle the root causes of conflicts, such as poverty and inequality, to achieve true peace. He also highlighted Nigeria’s key role in ECOWAS, contributing to the region’s security and governance frameworks.

“Nigeria’s leadership has been critical in developing mechanisms for conflict resolution, and we remain deeply committed to peacekeeping, diplomacy, and mediation across West Africa,” Tinubu added.

The President reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to fostering peace and economic cooperation for a more secure and prosperous future for the region.
