As the nationwide protest against the economic hardship currently rocking the country, tagged #EndBadGovernance, enters day 5, security operatives shot tear gas to stop pro-government protesters from gaining access to Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

The incident took place on Monday when #EndBadGovernance protesters had already settled down in the stadium for their business of the day.

Meanwhile, one of the #EndBadGovernance protesters, Ene Obi, former Action Aid Country Director, asked adults to come out to register their misgivings against the hardship and not allow the youth to think and act for them.

She said, “In places like Lagos, you have a lot of adults like that, but in Abuja, you leave your young people to be telling you how to live your life. It took young people to come out and start advocating for change, and you cannot come in, but you are the ones going to the market.

“You can’t buy garri; garri is now 1500; as the last time, three weeks ago that I bought it, you had been that were almost 2500; then you have a tuber of yam, which is about 5 thousand naira; yam is that for the poorest of the poor; as a mother, you boil it with red oil and give it to your children to at least quench hunger; at most, garri and groundnut; the groundnut bottle is now 2,700 naira.”

In a related development, security operatives also fired tear gas at protesters in the Gede and Jikwoyi areas of the nation’s capital, Abuja.

In the Nyanya area, the protesters were out in good numbers, but the kind of incident that happened in Jikwoyi did not take place in Nyanya since the security operatives stood facing the protesters without letting out canisters of gas to disperse them.

It would be recalled that on day 1 of the protest, the protesters started looting and molesting commuters in the axis, in clear disregard of a court order confining the protesters to the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

This is coming less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu addressed the nation on the issue.
