Immediate past First Lady of Kwara state, Omolewa Ahmed, on Saturday, staged an endurance walk against breast and cervical cancers among women, when she led several women and groups around the Ilorin metropolis, the state capital.
Speaking with journalists during the sensitization programme, Ahmed, who is the founder of LEAH Foundation, said that she initiated the campaign in 2016 when it was evident that women were not sufficiently aware of the damaging effect of the terminal ailment.
She said that the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) had reached out to people in the hinterland in its bid to sensitize those at the grassroots, adding that her passion for womenfolk started 13 years ago while in office, “I was able to zero in on the crusade against cancer”.
“This is a calling for me. It’s my ministry. That is why it has survived my office as the First Lady”.
She urged Nigerians to act on awareness and campaigns on health issues, saying that people should ensure proper adherence to awareness tips on their general health especially instances that can lead to terminal ailment.
Ahmed also advised women to take their physical being more seriously than daily chores, saying, “that is why we have been going even to the local governments to preach against breast cancer. We want to, at all cost, avoid mortality stage.”
She also said that her project sponsored a Nollywood movie (Diamond in the sky), featuring Omowunmi Dada, to promote the war against the deadly cancer.
The Nollywood actress, Omowunmi Dada, said that she accepted to play the lead role in the film because of her belief and poise for womanhood.
She encouraged girl-children and women to always go for cervical cancer screening.
