The former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Reverend Dr Supo Ayokunle, has charged the newly crowned Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, to face the challenges of kingship with courage and unwavering reliance on divine guidance.
Rev. Ayokunle gave the counsel during a coronation thanksgiving service held on Sunday at the Anglican Cathedral Church, Esiele, in Oyo Town. According to a release by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, the thanksgiving was organised by the Local Organising Committee for the monarch’s coronation.

Delivering a sermon titled “Reigning to Lead Oyo and Yoruba People to Prominence”, the respected cleric described Oba Owoade as a “divinely ordained paramount ruler”, likening his journey to the throne to that of King David in the Bible. He emphasised that courage and bravery are essential attributes for leadership, especially in pursuing justice, unity, and development.
“Kabiyesi, do not think you are alone on the throne,” Rev. Ayokunle declared. “Be courageous, steadfast, and committed. The Almighty God is standing by you. Call on Him and He will not let you down. Your mission shall surely be accomplished.”
He supported his charge with scriptural references from Deuteronomy 31:8, Isaiah 41:10, and 2 Timothy 1:7, noting that the monarch would face obstacles but with courage and faith, they would be overcome.
Rev. Ayokunle also appealed to the people of Oyo, both at home and abroad, to rally behind their new monarch with love, unity, and generosity. He urged them to set aside grudges and strife and contribute to the monarch’s well-being, referencing 2 Samuel 5:1–3.
Responding to the sermon, Oba Owoade expressed gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to lead with integrity and empathy. “If our people feel cared for and valued, not just for what they do but for who they are, we will earn their loyalty,” he said. “This requires listening, serving, and leading from a place of genuine concern.”
He added that his leadership would focus on principles rather than rigid rules, stressing that while rules may change behaviour temporarily, principles transform hearts permanently. He also promised to uphold his promises, promote open dialogue, and maintain ethical standards that build trust and unity.

Oba Owoade clarified that he had no prior connection with Governor Seyi Makinde or Senator Monsurat Sunmonu before his appointment as Alaafin. “I was never desperate or manipulative to become the Alaafin. It was entirely the will of God,” he stated.
The monarch extended a hand of fellowship to his fellow contestants for the stool, calling for unity in the collective task of transforming Oyo. “Divided we fall, but in unity, we shall accomplish the arduous task ahead,” he said.
Oba Owoade, accompanied by his wife, Ayaba Abiwunmi, who danced joyfully during the service, was also joined by members of the Oyo Mesi and other dignitaries including the Samu, Agba Akin, Baba Iyaji, elevated Baales, and members of the Owoade family.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of a customised Holy Bible to the new Alaafin, symbolising the spiritual foundation upon which his reign is expected to rest.
