Dr. Kayode Fayemi, former Governor of Ekiti State, urged for increased government and private sector commitment to research and development in Nigerian universities.
Speaking at the OAUTEK International Conference 2024 at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Fayemi, represented by former Nigerian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Eniola Ajayi, emphasized the importance of investing in research infrastructure and fostering academia-industry collaboration to create scalable, affordable solutions for Nigeria.

Fayemi, an APC chieftain, discussed “Fast-Tracking Industrialization through Frugal Innovation,” stressing that frugal innovation could drive Nigeria’s industrialization and economic transformation.
He highlighted that frugal innovation offers a strategic approach to address Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges and has the potential to establish industries that alleviate poverty and elevate Nigeria as a leader in sustainable manufacturing.
He added that with vision, investment, and collaboration, Nigeria could accelerate industrial growth and achieve economic prosperity.
Professor Lasisi Umoru, Dean of the Faculty of Technology, echoed these sentiments, stating that the conference aligns with Nigeria’s priorities, addressing critical needs across multiple sectors.
