THE Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to addressing the country’s socioeconomic issues and formulating strategies to counter emerging threats to national welfare.

Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, stated this during a town hall meeting organised by the ministry in Abuja, where she emphasised the government’s resolve to tackle the longstanding challenges facing Nigeria.

Commending the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima and other key officials, Onyejeocha noted that the government is focused on actualising the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda. She lauded the administration’s efforts in economic reform, promoting inclusive growth and enhancing security.

“The government remains committed to its pledge to Nigerians. We are working diligently to restore Nigeria’s economic prominence on the global stage, address socioeconomic issues directly and provide solutions to emerging threats,” Onyejeocha stated.

She added that the government is collaborating with stakeholders – policymakers, employers, and workers – to foster national development. The Ministry of Labour and Employment, she said, is tasked with ensuring decent work conditions, maintaining industrial peace and driving national growth.

Onyejeocha outlined the eight pillars of the administration’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, which focuses on job creation, education, healthcare, food security and social investments as essential elements of Nigeria’s development.

“The government has been vigorously pursuing these goals to reform the economy, ensure inclusive growth and strengthen security,” she said.

She assured Nigerians that the government, under the All Progressives Congress (APC), is determined to address the socioeconomic issues plaguing the nation and will develop solutions to new threats.

The town hall engagement aimed to raise awareness among labour leaders, employers and civil society organisations, mobilise the workforce to achieve the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda and foster cooperative relations between labour and the government.

“The Federal Government continues to seek collaboration with policymakers, employers and workers to sustain development momentum. Together, we can elevate our nation to new heights,” Onyejeocha said, expressing confidence in the experts’ ability to develop implementable strategies.

She thanked President Tinubu for his leadership and vision and she appreciated all stakeholders for their active participation in the event.

At the same event, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, represented by Mr Omolola Adegbenga, Head of Pensions at the CBN, expressed optimism about the country’s economic future.

He acknowledged that while adversity presents challenges, it also offers opportunities for stability and growth.

Cardoso emphasised that the CBN’s activities are centred on fostering economic development and good governance. He pointed out that while some may doubt the possibility of success, hope remains the foundation for achieving greatness.

“Hope is essential. With collective effort and resilience, we will overcome challenges and achieve significant success,” Cardoso said.

The town hall meeting convened key stakeholders from both the private and public sectors to discuss the unique economic challenges facing Nigeria and to explore strategies for sustainable development.

Prominent attendees included Mr Inuwa Yakubu, representative of the ministry’s Permanent Secretary; Honourable Baffa Dan Agundi, Director-General of the National Productivity Centre (NPC); Silas Agara, Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE); Comrade Issa Aremu, Director-General of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS); Mr Adedeji Adegoke, representative of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and Mrs Chinyere Emeka-Anuna, representative of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
