The Federal Government has renewed its focus on tackling urbanisation and housing challenges.
According to the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Alhaji Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo, Nigeria is taking a multi-faceted approach to address urbanisation and housing deficit.
Speaking during the Africa Urban Forum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Gwarzo highlighted Nigeria’s strategic approach to addressing these issues, with significant investments in urban infrastructure such as road networks, water supply, and sanitation improvements.
The minister emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships in increasing access to housing finance and reducing the nation’s housing deficit.
“We are implementing the National Housing Programme to provide affordable housing for low-income earners, and investing in urban infrastructure development, including roads, water and sanitation,” he stated.
The minister pointed to ongoing efforts to strengthen urban planning systems to ensure sustainable development, while promoting initiatives like the National Housing Fund, the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, and the urban renewal programme.
He said that government is committed to ensuring well-planned, sustainable, and inclusive cities, declaring that housing is a fundamental human rights that the administration must make a reality for all Nigerians.
