Ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to ensure a cleaner environment and address the menace of environmental pollution gained a boost on Wednesday with the launch of the Plastic Waste Reverse Vending Machine in Nigeria.

The Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Lawal, stated this in Abuja during the commissioning of Plastic Waste Reverse Vending Machines under the UNIDO Project ‘Promoting sustainable plastic value chains through circular economy practices’, held at the National Assembly complex, Abuja.

While noting that the launch marks the beginning of a new chapter in waste management for the nation, Mallam Lawal, who was the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Mr Mahmood Kambari, said: “Today, we take an important step forward in our collective fight against plastic pollution.

“As we stand together, this reverse vending machine represents not just a tool, but a symbol of our unwavering commitment to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for Nigeria.

“Reverse vending machines are a cutting-edge solution in waste management. They allow individuals to deposit bottles and other recyclable materials, receiving a reward in return.

“This simple yet powerful technology encourages proper waste disposal and creates a culture of recycling, where each citizen can actively participate in protecting our environment.

“Beyond its environmental impact, this machine promotes the concept of a circular economy. Instead of plastic ending up in landfills or polluting our oceans, it re-enters the production cycle, reducing the demand for new resources and minimizing our ecological footprint.

“We stand to benefit from cleaner communities, with fewer plastics littering our streets and waterways; economic opportunities where jobs are created and local industries boosted; and increased public awareness where it fosters the mindset of responsibility and sustainability, especially for future generations.

“With its unveiling, we embrace local innovation and craftsmanship, and a renewed dedication to protecting our environment,” the Minister said.

In his remarks, Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Environment, Hon. Julius Pondi, who applauded the initiative, described it as phenomenal.

While acknowledging the benefits of the initiative, Hon. Pondi urged UNIDO to work with the National Assembly on how to replicate the innovation across the country.
