No fewer than ten shops with projected goods worth billions of naira have been burned by fire in the popular Watt market in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, early Thursday.
A source revealed that the fire began at around 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, saying that no injury or death was recorded during the inferno although many shops had caught fire.
He attributed the cause of the fire to one of the shops with an electrical fault.
He further pointed out that all efforts made to reach the state fire service to extinguish the fire proved
abortive as only firefighters of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) were seen trying to get the fire under control, but it was difficult as it was escalating in many shops.
In a conversation with Mrs Susana, a businesswoman, she said that the fire that broke out around 4 a.m. had destroyed all her goods as all efforts to extinguish it failed.
She called on the government to come to her aid and also provide adequate security to check all activities in the market to avoid further incidents.
