Some parts of Ughelli community in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State have been submerged by flood following downpour on Saturday and Sunday.
Nationnewslead assembled that the affected areas included Up-Agbarho Street; Omoyibo Street, Ighagbomi; St. Matthias Anglican Church Road, Makolomi, Onogharigho; some houses along the East West Road; Samuel Oteri Street; Pipeline area; Second Amekpa, Ekrejebo; Oteri New Layout; Ekiugbo New Layout; Uloho Avenue; and other parts of the Ughelli metropolis.
Thousands of residents were said to have been sacked from their houses.
As of the time of filing this report, residents were seen fleeing their homes for fear of being trapped by the ravaging flood.
Some residents could not move their cars out of the streets.
Some of the affected residents lamented that they woke up on Sunday to see flood in their houses, with their property, including documents and credentials destroyed.
A resident of Omoyibo Street, Chief Godwin Ighoavwota, who decried the situation, said property worth millions of naira was destroyed
He said, “The natural water channels and drainage in the area have been blocked; the federal and state governments and relevant agencies of government should come to our aid by opening up the blocked water channels.
“As I speak, over 50 buildings on Omoyibo and Ighagbomi streets have been swallowed by the flood, and this will bring untold hardship on our people, especially those that have been sacked from their houses.
“We blame the Niger Delta Development Commission for building roads and drainage in the area without a proper channel to take out water from the area. The road which was built about six years ago with concrete has already failed.”
Also, the Vicar of St. Matthias Anglican Church, UK Street, Revd Festus Azikiwe, said some houses in the area and the road leading to the church were submerged by the flood, calling on the government to come to their rescue.
Another resident of Omoyibo Street, Mrs Vivian Blessing, said, “The flood situation is unbearable. As you can see, flood water has taken over our compound; anymore rainfall and the water will enter our apartments.”
The state Commissioner for Environment, Mr Chris Onogba, promised to visit the affected areas to assess the extent of damage.
