US Officials said that four persons, including a child, were killed after a chopper struck a radio tower in Houston, Texas on Sunday.
After taking off from Ellington Field, which is around 15 miles distant, the privately owned R44 helicopter, according to Houston authorities, went down at about 7:45 pm local time. It was not immediately apparent where it was going.
According to officials, all four of the victims were on board the helicopter, and the crash did not injure anyone on the ground. The damage and loss of life could have been worse because the crash happened near a butane tank and in a residential area.
Houston Mayor, John Whitmire said “HFD Station 17 was right down the street from where the helicopter hit a radio tower and was at the scene within minutes. This is a tragic event tonight, it’s a tragic loss of life.”
Police also reported that the radio tower was the only building or dwelling affected, but they also pointed out that the fire that broke out from the collision spread over two to three blocks.
Five minutes from Minute Maid Park, the Houston Astros’ home field, the crash was reported to have occurred at the intersection of Engelke Street and N. Ennis Street.
Following the collision, officers from the Houston Fire Department put out the fire.
The Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, and Houston officials are all looking into the disaster.
