Famous Ghanaian actor and politician John Dumelo has emerged victorious in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency election, defeating incumbent Lydia Alhassan in the 2024 general elections.
Dumelo, 40, running on the platform of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), won with 40,561 votes, while Alhassan, of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), secured 27,377 votes.
The victory follows his narrow defeat to Alhassan in the 2020 elections. Dumelo expressed gratitude to his supporters and promised to deliver on his campaign pledges.
He said, “The people of Ghana have been calling for change, and they’ve shown that if you don’t perform well or if you’re arrogant, they will vote you out.
“This is a valuable lesson for everyone. It’s not about money; it’s about the development of the people and addressing their needs.”
He also pledged to work diligently over the next four years to bring meaningful change and guide Ghana in the right direction.
The parliamentary election, held on Saturday, December 7, 2024, marked a major political achievement for Dumelo, who had previously contested the seat in 2020 but narrowly lost to Alhassan.
Beginning his acting career in 1991 while still in school, Dumelo has since become a household name, featuring in numerous films across both the Ghanaian (Gollywood) and Nigerian (Nollywood) movie industries.
