Niger State Governor, Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago, has emphasized the importance of prioritizing vocational training in the education sector.
During a courtesy visit by the management and staff of New Gate University at the Government House in Minna, Governor Bago suggested that scholarships should be awarded to the best students as an incentive, while short-term vocational training opportunities should be created for those who may not pursue degree qualifications.
Governor Bago stated, “Let us encourage vocational training even at the university level, introducing short-term courses on how to fix phones, repair computers, service barbing machines, and fix microphones. We need more people in this category than those with degrees.”
He further expressed concern over the insufficient number of medical practitioners in the state and emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting those interested in studying medical-related courses.
Governor Bago proposed a bond arrangement where medical students would receive a 50% scholarship and commit to working for the state government for a certain number of years before moving elsewhere.
The governor also urged stakeholders in the education sector to think innovatively, leveraging technology to promote e-learning.
He encouraged the management of New Gate University to engage in public-private partnerships for infrastructure development, consider renewable energy as an alternative power source, and make investments that would bring growth and development to the institution.
Governor Bago commended the founder of the university for establishing the institution and assured that his administration would continue to implement policies and programs that promote academic development in Niger State.
The Vice-Chancellor of New Gate University, Prof. Yusuf Sadiq, emphasized the significance of prioritizing education for young people, as they are agents of positive change and the future of society.
He mentioned that the university has partnered with a foundation to provide 50% tuition scholarships to qualified candidates from the 25 local government areas of the state, benefiting 120 students.
Prof. Sadiq also stated that the Pro-Chancellor has agreed to offer 100% scholarships to the best students in public schools within the Minna metropolis, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds.
The university offers courses in ICT, cyber security, medical-related subjects, and more, with the expectation of producing graduates who will contribute to the state’s development.
Prof. Sadiq called on the governor to provide support in the areas of security, reliable power supply, and conducive learning environments for the students.
The delegation from New Gate University was led by the Pro-Chancellor, Nuhu Hassan.
