Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has reaffirmed his commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by enhancing infrastructure and agriculture across the state.

Governor Bago made this pledge while addressing global leaders and representatives during the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) in New York, USA.

The theme, ‘Summit of the Future,’ is focused on reshaping global priorities and accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Goals to build an equitable, inclusive, and resilient future for all.

Governor Bago also participated in the opening session, as the world entered the second half of the 2030 Agenda, assessing progress towards the SDGs at both global and local levels.

According to him, Niger State, with its growing population of over 6 million, stands at a critical juncture in its efforts to achieve the SDGs.

While acknowledging progress in infrastructure and agriculture in relation to some SDG indicators, he emphasized that significant challenges remain in ensuring equitable health outcomes, sustainable urban and rural development, and poverty reduction.

He noted that the state’s ability to implement policies, mobilize resources, and engage communities is key to translating national strategies into local successes.

Governor Bago engaged in a series of meetings, deliberations, and discussions aimed at identifying pathways to meet SDGs 1, 2, 3, and 11.

He stressed that SDGs 3 and 11 are foundational to the success of all other goals, with side events highlighting the importance of technology, accountability, and partnerships in achieving these targets.

The Governor added that Niger State will heavily rely on its resources and significant investments in agriculture to achieve its Sustainable Development Goals.
