The Enugu government has summoned contractors involved in laying fibre optic cables and road construction over the alleged destruction of public utilities.
They are expected to meet government officials at the Office of the Secretary to the State Government at the Abuja Building, Government House, Enugu, on Monday.
The invitation is in a statement by the secretary to the state government, Chidiebere Onyia, in Enugu.
Mr Onyia said the Enugu government decried the incessant damage to public utilities by some contractors in the state.
According to him, the government has observed with dismay the indiscriminate destruction of public utilities such as water pipes, electric cables and roads by contractors and contract workers while laying fibre optic cables.
Others are road construction, the mounting of billboards, and other activities that require digging or drilling in Enugu.
“The government is at this moment issuing a stern warning that such destruction or damages will be treated as gross acts of economic sabotage for which the offenders shall be sanctioned with fines for full restoration of the damaged facilities,” Mr Onyia. “In addition, the perpetrators will face prosecution.”
