The socio-political group in Ondo State, Initiative for Akure Rebirth (IAR), has dismissed the recall process against the lawmaker representing Akure South/North Federal Constituency, Hon. Derin Abiodun Adesida, as a farce. The recall attempt is being spearheaded by some youths within the two local councils.

The group distanced itself from the recall move, urged politicians in the state to cease mudslinging, and advised them to collaborate with the lawmaker to advance the constituency and the state instead of exacerbating political tensions.

IAR’s position was outlined in a statement signed by its President and Publicity Secretary, Ayomide Akomolafe and Oluwagbemiga Kolawole, respectively. They described the recall effort as a scheme by desperate politicians aiming to discredit the lawmaker.

The statement read: “Our association, Initiative for Akure Rebirth, has noted the attempt to tarnish the image of Prince Abiodun Derin Adesida, the lawmaker representing Akure North and Akure South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.”

It was recently reported that a group known as Akure Youths Forum threatened to recall Prince Abiodun Derin Adesida from the National Assembly, accusing him of failing to bring the benefits of democracy to his constituents.

However, IAR asserted that Adesida has been unfairly criticized for non-performance, as he has made significant impacts since his return to the lower chamber of the National Assembly in June 2023.

The statement continued: “The group baselessly claims that Prince Adesida has not brought any benefits of democracy to the people of the federal constituency, alleging that he has not executed meaningful projects or empowered the youths and women in the constituency.”

“We would have ignored the group’s misinformation and empty threats to recall Prince Abiodun Derin Adesida from the National Assembly. We know their threats are hollow and incapable of affecting Adesida. However, their falsehoods could mislead the unwary and distort the truth.”

“If the members of the misguided and uninformed Akure Youths Forum are true indigenes of Akure, they should be aware of Prince Abiodun Derin Adesida’s significant contributions to the development of Akure Kingdom.”

“There is no doubt that Prince Abiodun Derin Adesida is devoted to Akure and genuinely concerned about the development of the ancient city.”

Highlighting some of the lawmaker’s achievements over the past year, the group noted: “Adesida has facilitated employment for no fewer than 100 youths, with many securing positions in the Nigeria Customs Service. In less than a year since his return to the National Assembly in 2023, he has helped at least 30 Akure youths secure employment, including positions with the Federal Road Safety Corps.”

“He has also provided funds to youths and women for various trades. In addition to the ongoing registration of constituents to benefit from N150,000 cash distributions, some members have received N50,000 monthly from the federal government for over three months.”

“The claim by the Akure Youths Forum that Prince Abiodun Derin Adesida has not empowered youths and women in the federal constituency is unfounded.”

“What empowerment could be greater than securing gainful employment? The group should clarify the type of empowerment they are referring to.”

The group further claimed: “During his first term in the National Assembly, Prince Abiodun Derin Adesida played a key role in installing a 330/132/33kV 2x150MVA transmission substation in the federal constituency, valued at N6 billion. This remains the largest project any federal lawmaker in the state has attracted to his constituency.”

“The substation, located in Owode town along Akure/Owo road, was completed in 2017 but has yet to be energized. Once operational, it will significantly improve electricity supply for Ondo and Ekiti states, potentially increasing supply from 55MW to over 200MW.”

“It is also recorded that Prince Abiodun Derin Adesida influenced the installation of a N150 million 132/33KV Power Distribution Sub-Station to enhance power distribution in Akure South. Located on Igbatoro Road, Alagbaka, Akure, this project included the distribution of 30 transformers within the federal constituency and improvements to schools, roads, and water infrastructure.”

“Since returning to the National Assembly in 2023, Adesida has facilitated the installation of solar street lights in at least 25 communities in both Akure South and Akure North, and the construction of classrooms, including one at the School for the Deaf, Akure. He has also moved motions and sponsored bills seeking development for the constituency, including one for upgrading the Federal College of Agriculture, Akure, to a university.”

“We believe it is important for citizens to monitor their representatives’ performances and hold them accountable for a better society. However, spreading lies or misinformation is highly unethical and counterproductive. We view this as harmful and contrary to moral standards.”

“We know the sources of the Akure Youths Forum’s agitation and the individuals backing their claims. Only God knows who will participate in future elections and who will be victorious. Let us proceed with caution and consider God’s guidance in all our endeavors.”
