Gunmen suspected to be bandits ambushed and killed the Chief of Chanchanji, HRH Alhaji Tanimu Kunbiya, and his son, Yusuf Tanimu, on Friday evening. The tragic incident occurred as the traditional ruler and his son were returning from a funeral service in Takum.
A press statement from the special adviser to the governor on media and digital communication, Emmanuel Bello, revealed that Governor Agbu Kefas received the news with deep sadness. The governor described the brutal killing of the monarch as tragic.
Governor Kefas has ordered security agents to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ambush and to pursue the perpetrators of this heinous crime. He emphasized the urgency of bringing everyone involved to justice as quickly as possible.
The governor called for calm among Takum residents, assuring them that no stone would be left unturned in the pursuit of the criminals. He reiterated his commitment to eradicating lawlessness and criminality in the state, highlighting the strong security measures his administration has implemented.

Dr. Kefas also expressed his condolences to the people of Chanchanji and Takum, urging them to work towards peaceful coexistence. He assured them of continued efforts to ensure the state’s safety in collaboration with partners.
This marks the third killing of a traditional ruler by suspected bandits in Taraba State this year, following the deaths of the chiefs of Sansani and Usmanu.
