A guard at the Orchard Farm owned by the Emir of Yauri, Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi, Malam Usman Maigadi, has been killed by a hippopotamus in Yauri, Kebbi State.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the incident occurred on Sunday while the 60-year-old was fishing in the Yauri River at Tillo Village in Yauri Local Government Area. The animal reportedly attacked Maigadi, possibly perceiving him as a threat to its calf.

The Chairman of Yauri Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu, confirmed that Maigadi was buried according to Islamic rites in Yauri after a funeral prayer.

Governor Nasir Idris expressed his condolences to the Yauri Emirate and the deceased’s family through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Idris. The governor urged the emirate and the family to accept the tragic incident as the will of Allah.

“We sympathize with the Yauri Emirate and the family of the deceased. May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus,” the governor said.

The incident highlights the potential dangers of human-wildlife interactions, especially in areas where animals like hippos are known to be protective of their young.
