In this interview by Segun Adebayo, project manager and data research analyst, Ifeoluwa Oladele speaks on how to mitigate algorithmic biases in critical business decisions. A noteworthy example of ethical considerations being overlooked in AI-driven decisions involves the deployment of facial recognition technology by various organisations and law enforcement agencies. This technology has faced criticism for its biases, particularly in misidentifying people of colour. The use of such technology without proper ethical considerations and safeguards has led to wrongful arrests and invasions of privacy, raising significant concerns about racial bias, privacy infringement, and the potential for surveillance abuse. The impact on stakeholders, especially minority communities, has been profound, leading to a loss of trust in technology and its applications, as well as calls for stricter regulations and ethical frameworks to govern the use of AI in sensitive areas.

How do you ensure that algorithmic biases are identified and mitigated in AI applications used for critical business decisions?

This approach includes using diverse and representative data sets, conducting regular audits for biases, employing advanced bias detection tools, adopting transparent and explainable AI models using deep learning, assembling diverse development teams, adhering to ethical AI guidelines documentation, engaging with stakeholders for feedback, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. These practices help reduce the risk of biases in an AI system by promoting fairness, accountability, and transparency in AI-driven decisions and effectively addressing the concerns of all stakeholders.

Could you provide examples of regulatory frameworks that have been effective in addressing ethical challenges related to AI in business decision-making?

There are various global regulatory frameworks that aim to address ethical challenges in AI by promoting responsible development and application. The IEEE’s Ethically Aligned Design highlights human well-being in AI systems, suggesting a global movement towards ensuring AI technologies are developed and deployed with ethical considerations at the forefront. Also,  the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) enhances data privacy, which indirectly affects AI ethics, while its Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI outline principles for ethical AI development. The proposed AI Act in the EU seeks to classify and regulate AI systems based on risk. Similarly, for example, the UK’s AI Council Roadmap and Singapore’s Model AI Governance Framework offer guidance for ethical AI use, focusing on transparency, fairness, and public values.

How do you balance the need for data storage in AI applications with privacy concerns and ethical considerations?

The relationship between ethical AI development and regulatory environments is expected to deepen, driven by stricter global regulations, a unified approach to international standards, and an increasing recognition of ethical AI as a competitive advantage. Adaptive and flexible regulatory models will likely emerge to keep pace with AI innovation, incorporating public participation and emphasising education on ethics and compliance for AI professionals. Businesses and governments will focus on mechanisms for enhanced accountability, such as audit trials and impact assessments, to ensure AI systems are transparent, fair, and aligned with societal values. This evolving landscape underscores a collective move towards ensuring AI technologies are developed and deployed responsibly, balancing innovation with ethical considerations and legal obligations.
