Oluwakemi Olushola is a hospitality professional with over a decade of experience in the industry. She is the CEO of Harrington Inn Hotel and Akara ‘n’ More, an indigenous restaurant in Ibadan. She is also a director at Women in Hospitality Nigeria (WIHN). In this interview by KANGMWA GOFWEN, she speaks about some challenges peculiar to the culinary businesses and how she is thriving amidst the current economic situation.
How did your culinary journey begin? Was it something you wanted to do from childhood?
My culinary journey officially started in 2022 and was born out of passion. I loved cooking right from childhood. My mum is a caterer and I learnt a lot from her. I was the chef of the house while growing up. I never got tired of cooking. I like to explore and try new and different menus, and even bake pastries. So, along the line, I found myself in the hospitality industry. I did not study any hospitality course and did not know hospitality could be a career. However, I secured an employment in the industry and I learnt a lot about hotel management and all. After gaining experience for over 10 years, I decided to own a hotel and to I run a restaurant and bar that run for 24 hours. So, when people come around they complement the food and also spot the difference the day I did not cook the food personally. So, I decided to be cooking myself. It could be tiring, but the journey has been an interesting one, and I thank God for that.
What are some challenges you have faced as an entrepreneur, particularly in the culinary industry?
Many challenges such as intense competition. The industry is highly competitive with many talented chefs and restaurants vying for customers’ attention. Standing out and attracting a loyal customer base can be a challenge. Changing consumer preferences and tastes are constantly evolving, making it essential for us to stay updated and adapt their offerings. Keeping up with food trends and offering unique and innovative dishes can be challenging. Rising operational costs is also a challenge. Managing finances and ensuring profitability is a constant challenge for us because of the inflation. Also, finding and retaining skilled staff can be difficult. Hiring and training talented chefs, cooks, and service staff are crucial for maintaining consistency and quality.
Finally, marketing, branding, and building a strong brand are essential for attracting customers. However, creating a unique identity and reaching the target audience is truly challenging, especially with limited marketing budgets. I know that no business is devoid of challenges, but we are determined to overcome and succeed.
With the current economic situation in the country, how do you manage to stay in business?
During this period of economic downturn, I have decided to focus on my core strengths, exploring new opportunities, reducing costs, and finding innovative ways to attract customers, as it’s important for businesses to stay agile and responsive to the changing economic landscape in order to remain competitive and sustainable.
Women are doing great in different industries. Do you think they get the recognition they deserve?
You’re right. Gender disparities and underrepresentation of women in various industries, including the hospitality industry, continue to be a challenge. However, I think that efforts are being made by women and other industry players to address these issues and promote gender equality. It’s crucial to recognise and support the achievements and contributions of women in the hospitality industry and work towards creating more inclusive and diverse environments. By raising awareness, advocating for equal opportunities, and championing women’s leadership, we can strive for a more equitable future.
As an entrepreneur, what other policies can government put in place to enable you thrive?
There are several ways that the government can support entrepreneurs. Government can implement policies such as improving access to capital, creating a favourable regulatory environment, providing education and training, supporting research and development, investing in infrastructure, fostering collaboration and networking opportunities, protecting intellectual property, and facilitating market access and international trade. These policies would empower entrepreneurs, encourage innovation, and facilitate business growth. Running any kind of business in Nigeria is not easy. So, as young businesses, we need all the encouragement and support we can get from the government.
What is the concept behind Akara ‘n’ More?
Akara ‘n’ More started from home. There’s a way I made akara for my husband at home and it’s very fluffy inside and crunchy outside. It’s unique, and I truly can’t recall how I came up with the recipe. I guess it was God. So, a friend came visiting and she said, “this your akara, can’t you just find a way of inculcating it into your menu?” That was how came up with Akara ‘n’ More. So, we use the akara to attract the attention because it’s not the regular one you would find around and you can’t find akara and gari or akara and pap in an everyday restaurant. Akara was a means to attract the attention of people to the brand. We predominantly serve the central Ibadan area but we look to expand our reach as we grow, by God’s grace.
How well do think the hospitality industry is doing in Nigeria?
The hospitality industry in Nigeria is experiencing a significant growth and development. The country has seen a rise in the number of hotels, resorts, and guest houses catering to both domestic and international tourists. Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and vibrant cities attract visitors from around the world, contributing to the growth of the hospitality sector. Furthermore, I think the government has been investing in infrastructural development and tourism promotion, which has further boost the industry. Overall, the hospitality sector in Nigeria is thriving and holds great potential for continued success.
Where do you see your business in next five years?
In the next five years, I envision my business expanding to new heights. I would have established a strong presence in the industry, with a loyal customer base and a reputation for excellence. It won’t stop there. I will continue to innovate and create unique and delicious dishes, constantly pushing the boundaries of culinary creativity. I will as well explore new avenues, such as opening additional locations or even launching line of food products. Ultimately, my goal is to become a household name in the culinary world and be known for providing exceptional dining experiences and inspiring others with my passion for food.

Starting a new business in a challenging economy can be daunting. But with careful planning, adaptability, and perseverance, you will overcome obstacles and find success. I believe that there is nothing a determined person cannot achieve. So, plan, set goal, and be determined to achieve them.
