Raphael Yewande, a recognised expert in agricultural business, is renowned for his innovative approach to integrating data analytics with sustainable farming practices. In this interview with NURUDEEN ALIMI, he shares how his work stands at the forefront of agribusiness, where technology-driven solutions are reshaping traditional farming methods to meet the challenges of the 21st century:
CAN you share with us how your journey into agriculture started?
My journey into agriculture began in Nigeria, where I earned a degree in Agricultural Economics and gained invaluable hands-on experience managing farms. Early in my career, I tackled complex issues such as labour management, irrigation projects and water rights. These formative experiences provided me with a practical understanding of the intricate challenges that modern farmers face, laying the groundwork for my future leadership in the industry.
As my career progressed, I emerged as a thought leader in labour economics, particularly in the areas of the Adverse Effect Wage Rate (AEWR) and the H-2A visa programme, which are critical to the functioning of global agricultural labor markets.
my expertise in analysing labour policies has been instrumental in helping farmers and agribusinesses navigate complex regulatory landscapes while maintaining profitability and ethical labour practices.
My insights into labour shortages and wage structures have helped shape the conversation around the future of labour in agriculture, offering solutions that balance worker welfare with economic sustainability.
Aside trying to shape the future of labour in agriculture, what other things are you doing to boost the sector?
Beyond labour economics, my leadership in data analytics has revolutionised agricultural operations. I believe that the future of agriculture lies in the ability to leverage big data to optimise every aspect of farm management. By analysing large datasets, he has enabled agribusinesses to streamline their operations, reduce inefficiencies, and make informed decisions that drive profitability. My data-driven strategies have become essential tools for businesses looking to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving agricultural landscape.
A key hallmark of my work has been the development of dynamic, real-time dashboards that provide agricultural managers with insights into their operations. These tools offer transparency across critical areas such as labor utilisation, resource management, and financial performance. By equipping farm managers with actionable data, I have empowered them to make faster and more informed decisions, enabling them to respond to fluctuating market conditions, environmental changes, and workforce availability with agility and precision.
In addition to my technical expertise, I am a staunch advocate for sustainability in agriculture. As the world grapples with the effects of climate change and resource depletion, my work emphasises the need for environmentally responsible farming practices that ensure long-term agricultural viability. My promotion of precision agriculture—where technology is used to optimise resource use—demonstrates my commitment to creating a resilient and sustainable global food system.
How do you see the future of agribusiness particularly in Nigeria?
I see the future of agribusiness as one where data analytics and sustainable practices converge to solve the world’s most pressing food security challenges. My work is not just about improving the present state of agriculture but about laying the foundation for a more resilient and adaptable system that can thrive in the face of future challenges. My research and innovations are critical in preparing the agricultural industry to meet the demands of a growing global population while minimising environmental impact.
My influence as an expert and leader in the field of agribusiness and data analytics is profound. His contributions have reshaped how farms and businesses operate, making them more efficient, sustainable, and responsive to change. My work continues to inspire peers and drive meaningful advancements in the agricultural sector, solidifying his reputation as a pioneering force in the industry.
