A leader is someone who influences a certain group of people with the view to them using their resources to achieve set goals, aims and objectives.
A fundamental ingredient in leadership is influence (affecting people’s beliefs and actions). Leadership is influence.
The more influence the more power.
- The more influence the more mobilization of people and resources.
- The more influence the more results
- The more influence the more rewards
- High influence – High results
- Low influence – Low results.
“If you want to be an effective leader, you must build influence. You can’t lead by just position alone. In fact, if you use your position and authority to “lead”, you aren’t really leading at all, you are just pushing. And when you push, people often push back. When you lead by position, people may do what your authority allows, but they will likely do the bare minimum and won’t have the desire to go above and beyond for you. Influence is different. With influence, people choose to follow you. They aren’t doing it because you are the boss, but they are doing it because of the respect and relationship they have with you. What exactly is influence? Influence is the relationship and respect you have with and from your team that causes them to want to follow you and to act with and for you.” Thomas R Harris
Influence is never static. It can grow or diminish.
“Merriam-Webster defines influence as “the power or capacity of causing an effect in indirect or intangible ways.” In the business world, that boils down to getting people to do what you want – not because you told them to, but because they are convinced it’s the right thing to do. Dorie Clark, author of Entrepreneurial You, says that when you have the ability to influence, “You get more done and you advance the projects you care about and are responsible for.” According to Clark that translates into you being “more likely to be noticed, get promoted, and receive raises.” And while the ability to influence can benefit you personally, it also helps those you lead because they feel collaborated with and listened to rather than ordered about.
In today’s world of myriad digital distractions, taking the time and energy needed to build influence is harder than ever. We, and our colleagues, work so quickly and are often stretched so thin that learning how to build constructive influence sometimes falls by the wayside.” Loebleadership.com
A leader must know how to grow his influence.
1.) Understand your leadership comes with influence. Influence is inherent in your position/office/status as a leader. Always operate with that consciousness. Expect your instructions to be carried out. Have faith in yourself and in your words.

HOW TO GROW YOUR LEADERSHIP INFLUENCE Part 2
Last time we began looking at how we can grow our influence as leaders. We saw that a leader is someone who influences a certain group of people with the view to them using their resources to achieve set goals, aims and objectives.
A fundamental ingredient in leadership is influence (affecting people’s beliefs and actions). Leadership is influence.
The more influence the more power.
A leader must know how to grow his influence.
1.) Understand your leadership comes with influence. Influence is inherent in your position/office/status as a leader. Always operate with that consciousness. Expect your instructions to be carried out. Have faith in yourself and in your words.
“I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.” Matthew. 8:9
“Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?” Ecclesiastes 8:4
- Communicate deliberately and intentionally understanding you are backed up and your communication is accompanied with power
2.) Let your communication be powered with accuracy, boldness and deliberateness. Avoid errors, mistakes and failure
3.) Be an authority in your field. Be competent. Be the answer to questions and solutions to needs. Be the go-to person to get the best answer.
“No matter what industry you’re in, things change every day. Therefore if want to be seen as an influential figure then not only do you need to be in the know, but you need to be ahead of the majority in acquiring the knowledge. You should embrace changes and take them in your stride, commenting on them as appropriate. You need to ask yourself if you’re continuing to provide your followers with knowledge and insights that they’re unable to acquire elsewhere. If not, then why would they favour you over another influencer?” Alicia Russell
4.) Be a model example to follow, standard to beat and a reference point. Be worthy of being emulated and followed.
5.) Be competent.
“Think about it: If you had a boss that was really nice, but was never able to get anything done, was indecisive and was unable to do much of their leadership duties well, would that inspire confidence in you? Don’t get me wrong, you may like them as a person, but would you want to follow them? Probably not. While trust is more important, you still need to have some kind of level of competence (and if it’s low, you should be working to grow it). A leader’s job is to lead people to the accomplishment of a goal. If you aren’t doing that, you aren’t leading, you are just being a nice person.” Thomas R Harris
6.) Avoid over-familiarity with your followers.
7.) Pray for
(a) Wisdom
(b) Favour.

7.) Pray for

(b) Favour
(c) Boldness. Confidence is vital.
“When you present your ideas with confidence, people listen. If you hem and haw, implying that you’re not sure about what you’re saying, no one else will be either. By doing your research, knowing what you’re talking about, and being prepared, you will find it much easier to project confidence and self-assuredness. Note: arrogance is not the same as confidence, and there can be a fine line between the two. Do not let justified confidence become unjustified arrogance.” Loebleadership.com
8.) Be a person of impeccable integrity
9.) Be empathetic and have a strong emotional intelligence
10.) Get better daily and be seen to so do.
11.) Be a delight to work with
- Be a man of your word.
- Be a stickler to rules but never be short of the milk of human kindness.
- Be courteous and appreciative.
“You become a motivational influencer when you encourage people and communicate with them on an emotional level. This process creates a bridge between you and others, while also building up their confidence and sense of self-worth. When people feel good about themselves during the times they’re with you, then your level of influence increases significantly.” John Maxwell
- Be goal-oriented ad go-getter but also a humane person.
“The ability to influence people without irritating them is the most profitable skill you can learn. “ Napoleon Hill
CONCLUDED.
